Victory-class Battleship (BB)

Original Date of Design: 26 Aug 2298
First Example Laid Down: 07 Aug 2299
First Example Completed: 28 Jun 2301
Fleets of Service: Britain

In 2298, shortly after the Kafer war broke out, the Royal Space Navy received sufficient funds for the Victory-class battleship. An accelerated building program resulted in two vessels being commissioned by mid 2301.

The Victory-class allowed designers to include many features that they were not able to fit to the Invincible-class battlecruiser, including a small scientific section and a larger Ship's Troops compliment. The hull is a stretched octagon in view, which results in a roughly square target profile, with all views being the same. The hamster cages are recessed in the hull, and heavily armored doors protect the outer walls of the cages during battle.

It was decided to mount the main close-in armament in four gun towers despite the increased reflected signature, with the remaining lasers in jack turrets. WDS-S14 submunition dispensers were added for defense against attacking fighters and Grapeshot submunition dispensers were added for anti-missile defense. Offensive weaponry consists of Ritage-2 missiles and three Harrier-class fighters. Two HD-5 'Scout' drones can be used to provide reconnaissance and augment the ships own impressive sensors suite.

Cargo space is subdivided into fuel tankage for small craft, ordnance reloads, ground troop supplies and general cargo. The ordnance cargo space generally holds a complete reload of missiles and submunitions.

Vessels of the class cost sixty percent more that of the Invincible-class battlecruiser, but less than half the expense of the American Pennsylvannia-class battleship. British strategists feel that this is well work the expense. Unfortunately, the Royal government only supplied sufficient funding for the two vessels that have been constructed. Good performance in their 'baptism of fire' could free more funding for future vessels.

Invincible-class Battlecruiser (BC)

Original Date of Design: 23 Jun 2292
First Example Laid Down: 15 Feb 2294
First Example Completed: 14 Nov 2299
Fleets of Service: Britain

As the Americans had done with their Pennsylvania-class battleship, the British looked to current capital ships as a starting point for their own. Unfortunately, budget constraints forced a downgrading of ship size and class to that of a battlecruiser. Laid down in early 2294, the Invincible was not yet completed when the Kafer war broke out in 2298. Following that conflict's beginning, the construction was stepped up with the Invincible being completed in late 2299. As it was the only capital ship above cruiser class, the Royal Government was reluctant to let it leave the Sol system, citing the need for the defense of the home planet.

After the initial Kafer war, the British government increased funding to the Royal Space Navy, which resulted in the construction of the Victory-class battleship. Comparable to the American Pensylvannia, the Victory-class has temporarily slowed the construction of more Invincible-class ships. The next of the class is scheduled to be commissioned in 2304 or early 2305.

Sea Lord-class Carrier (CV)

Original Date of Design: 10 Sep 2296
First Example Laid Down: 28 May 2299
First Example Completed: 09 May 2301
Fleets of Service: Britain

The Sea Lord-class carrier was originally designed in 2296, as an exercise by the RSN who wanted to determine the feasibility of a deep-space fighter carrier. The plans that were developed showed that it could be done, but at an exorbitant cost. That fact, coupled with the budgetary restraints that the RSN was under at the time, caused the design to be shelved. The only component of the design that was to enter production was the Lancaster-class bomber, which was a missile-carrying fighter. After contact was made with the alien race known as Kafers, and their subsequent invasion of Aurore, the need for a carrier became apparent. Lobbying by the RSN resulted in sufficient funding for the construction of one vessel, the Nelson, in 2299.

The Sea Lord-class carriers Lancaster-class bombers for long range offensive operations and Harrier-class fighters for bomber escort and as the first line of defense for the carrier and its battle group. The Air Bridge contains surplus flight controller stations, which allows its own small craft contingent and other small craft to operate under the single command of the Air Bridge. The carrier contains small craft maintenance facilities and additional maintenance personnel to perform major overhauls on small craft, including the Commando-class landers.

Nelson-class Cruiser (CG)

Original Date of Design: 16 Mar 2262
First Example Laid Down: 19 Aug 2263
First Example Completed: 30 Nov 2266
Fleets of Service: Britain

The Nelson-class cruiser was originally designed in the 2260s and is due to be phased out in the early part of the 24th century. Originally the largest class of vessel in the Royal Space Navy, it has been eclipsed by the capital ships of the Invincible and Victory classes. This has come about as a result of the decision to place less dependence on France to protect and maintain the peace.

The class is typical of cruisers of its day with several notable features. It is powered by a fission plant, which results in a large engineering compliment and damage control section. As one of the primary missions was 'showing the flag', a small troop contingent is present for planetary landings. As the cruiser is not interface capable, a small hanger deck houses two landers. Normally, one lander deploys the troops and the other deploys a section of two vehicles, typically APCs.

The class was refitted in the late 2290s with newer Guiscard lasers and Ritage-2 missiles. Also at this time, the current landers were replaced with Commando-class units. The Flag Bridge positions on the Bridge were converted to additional communications and computer workstations during the refit as the capital ships of the Invincible and Victory classes would take over that role.

Robust-class Destroyer (DD)

Original Date of Design: 29 Mar 2283
First Example Laid Down: 14 Feb 2284
First Example Completed: 13 Aug 2286
Fleets of Service: Britain

The Robust-class destroyer is basically a modernization of the Kiev-class destroyer, which Britain had been license building and purchasing from the Ukraine for the past decades.

The power plant and stutterwarp drive sections remained the same, even though the fission unit requires a large engineering crew. The main improvements are an upgrading of the passive sensor suite, doubling the detection range; advanced hull masking; improved screens; and additional armor. The hull has been constructed of advanced composite materials, resulting in an overall lighter vessel, with a subsequent increase in warp efficiency. The weaponry has remained the same with the exceptions of a new targeting computer system and the replacement of the TTAs with UTES technology bought from America. The bays have been modified to accept the Ritage-2 missiles, which has increased the length of the vessel slightly, increasing its lateral target profile.

A hanger deck for a small craft is not provided; when required, a Commando-class Lander or shuttle can be attached to the hull via magnetic grapples. When a small craft is carried, fuel bladders are installed in the cargo bay.

Due to the complexity and expense of converting existing Kiev-class destroyers, the Royal Navy will instead phase out the current Kiev-class as the Robust-class are commissioned.

Ulysses-class Frigate (FF)

Original Date of Design: 21 Mar 2283
First Example Laid Down: 14 Jan 2285
First Example Completed: 14 Feb 2287
Fleets of Service: Britain

Having seen the capabilities of the French Aconit-class frigate, the British purchased two vessels for evaluation. While the Aconits were capable warships, the Admiralty found several areas lacking, including the low warp efficiency and small missile compliment. Using the class as a basis, the British designed their own frigate class, in much the same manner as they had done for their Robust-class destroyers.

The Ulysses-class frigate mounts Hyde Dynamics EA122 lasers which have improved integral targeting over the French Guiscard LL-98's of the Aconit. This allowed the turrets to be configured as single rather than double weapon mounts and still deliver the same firepower. It also resulted in a twenty percent increase in warp efficiency even though the Ulysses is 400 tons heavier, due to more power being available to the stutterwarp drive. A single Grapeshot submunition dispenser provides anti-missile defense capabilities. The Ritage-1 missile pack was utilized as an inexpensive manner of adding a missile capability at a time when Britain was converting most of its vessels to Ritage-2. By using the missile pak arrangement, the Ritage-1 pack can simply be changed to a Ritage-2 pak with little effort.

Notes:

  1. Turret arc values are (counter clockwise from left center): 1 bow, 2 starboard bow quarter, 3 starboard broadside, 4 starboard aft quarter, 5 aft, 6 port aft quarter, 7 port broadside, 8 port bow quarter.
  2. This design came about during the summer of 1991 when I set about preparing to play Invasion scenario 'All or Nothing'. Class names were picked from the Invasion and other sourcebook listings, any similarities in name or design to vessels created by others is purely coincidental.
  3. Hull Hit Capacity has been determined using the formulas presented by KevinC on the 2300AD Mailing List on 10 Oct 1997, where the standard calculation has been modified by the use of the cube root of the armor level instead of armor level to the first power. Therefore: Hull Hits = Material Volume * (Armor level)^(1/3). This makes more realistic hull hit capacities.

Fleets of Service: Britain

The Harrier-class fighter was designed in 2265 as a replacement for the Donovan. The main armament is provided by a Wombat Defense Systems WDS-S14 submunition dispenser. The 1x4 detonation laser warhead has proved to be an effective anti-ship weapon, and requires a smaller airframe than that of a missile-carrying fighter. Harriers are carried aboard the Invincible-class battlecruisers, Victory-class battleships and the Admiral-class carrier.

Lancaster-class Fighter/Bomber (FTR)

Original Date of Design: 28 Sep 2295
First Example Laid Down: 03 Sep 2296
First Example Completed: 20 Nov 2297
Fleets of Service: Britain

Constructed in 2297 amidst budgetary constraints, the Lancaster is an inexpensive, high-tech, stealth fighter / bomber. Designed to provide long-range offensive capabilities for the Sea Lord-class carrier, the Lancaster carries a single anti-ship missile in an external sling mount. The bomber uses its stealth technology to approach targets and launch its missile; once launched the superior speed allows the bomber to escape back to the carrier. A Wombat Defense Systems submunition dispenser provides defense armament. With a drive efficiency equal to that of the Harrier-class fighters, it is expected that Harriers will provide escorts for the Lancasters bombers as required.
